Jakarta, 25 August 2016, The winners of this year’s Sustainable Business Awards (SBA) Indonesia were announced today in the presence of H.E. Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Industry H.E. Bambang Brodjonegoro, Minister of National Development and Planning, Rosan P. Roeslani, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) as well as over150 attendees from Indonesian and international corporations, government officials and media at the Shangri-La, Jakarta.
“Indonesia is the the fourth most populated country in the world and boasts a unique biodiversity that integrates a large part of global climate and water systems that provide vital life to the planet.” explains Shinta Kamdani, President of IBCSD and Vice Chair Woman of KADIN Indonesia introducing the Awards. “Business communities share the responsibility alongside government to innovate towards an economic development that is primarily eco-efficient” These awards prize business leaders’ efforts In Indonesia towards the Paris climate goal of limiting global warming.The Sustainable Business Awards, run in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), to recognize businesses that demonstrate leadership and proven commitment to sustainability through rigorous assessment on business practices and tools that score both processes and performance across the following 11 categories; Strategy and vision; Workforce; Community; Energy management; Water management; waste & Material productivity; climate change; Supply chain; land-use, biodiversity and the environment; Business responsibility and ethics.
“28 million Indonesians are living below the poverty line, these disadvantaged communities are the hardest hit in times of environmental and social insecurity. Today more than ever, the world needs to create an economy that is inclusive to society as whole; we all need to become responsible ecocitizens,” said Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Puan Maharani.
Overall winner : Unilever Indonesia
Unilever Indonesia received a high ranking across the board of most categories and is recognized as the verall winner of the sustainable business awards this year. From sourcing of raw materials, through production, to sales, Unilever has consistently increased its efforts year-on year to adapt their supply chain towards an increasingly sustainable production. They were also recognized for the proven track record for the concept of ‘purpose-driven’ brands that must not only have a clear purpose that contributes to a social or environmental concern, but the product itself must also contribute to Unilever’s sustainable initiative targets. The company has successfully reduced carbon emission by 21.8% per tonne production since 2008. As a key player global supply chain manufacturer in commodities, Unilever developed a Sustainable Palm Oil Sourcing Policy. Their business strategy goals strive to decouple environmental footprint from growth and generate positive social impact; such as health and wellbeing of consumers. Unilever adheres to strict codes of engagement with business, government, consumers and stakeholders that have raised the bar of industry standards in Asia.

Each contender completed a comprehensive interview, questionnaire and was scored against their corporate sustainability vision, environmentaland social management strategies. Winners were chosen by an expert cross-industry panel including IBCSD, Editors-in-Chief, PWC (see full list below)
